This event was hugely successful with both the staff at firstsite and the attending public, both the acousmatic fanfares and the brass fanfares received a good audience. The acosumatic fanfares received some good interactions with the public and had become popular with the local young, teenage audience that met in the mosaic space.

Of the brass fanfares, one was very popular with the ensemble and was played again in the reception.

Both the acousmatic and the brass fanfares can be heard on this site now, there will more details from the event going on this site as firstsite release it, Im currently waiting for a PDF of the original programme to put up and futher photos

Electronic fanfares with Colchester New Music
Thurs 12- Sat 31 11-7,on the hour.

Fanfares is a collaborative project between Colchester New Music and firstsite. Julia Usher and Stuart Russell of CNM proposed a project which would celebrate the new building which provides fabulous spaces for listening and playing new music composition. A call out was made in mid November for scores for either brass fanfares or electroacoustic fanfares. A tremendous response was whittled down by a selection panel to eight fanfares for brass and eight electroacoustic compositions.

During the last two weeks of December, listen out for recordings which will ring out throughout the firstsite building. On Saturday 17th, locally based group Bespoke Brass will play the brass compositions live throughout the day
{from 10:00} whilst there will be special activity for families to join in with as artist Rory Pilgrim will respond to the music by encouraging visitors to move, draw or create inspired by the contemporary music.

Why fanfares?

The organisers  ask composers to consider:

  •            What is a fanfare, in the 21st century?  it Opens, it Closes – like bookends.

  •             Fanfares are functional!  What kind of applied art can be used in the 21st century

  •             How could fanfares relate to art, pictures; or frames? To exhibitions in the gallery?

  •             Be innovative!
